For hundreds of years, children have been placed in harsh working conditions without any say. Children are often sold and forced to work in sweat shops, out in fields, in mines, some are sold into prostitution and some are in the military. A lot of these children are forced to do these jobs because they need to help their families. Sometimes families will sell their children to do labor because they are in debt. Some might say that working as a child could be beneficial. It teaches them good work ethic and responsibility. It also teaches them how working hard and earning money is a way of living. But in reality, it robs children of their childhood and it delays their social skills and their basic learning skills as well. A child should not have to worry about working or being physically and mentally abused by their supervisors, co-workers or other people at such a young age because they shouldnââ¬â¢t be in a working environment like that. A lot of these children are denied health care, education, nutrition and the protection of their families. This kind of labor for children takes a toll on them and affects them later in life. Child labor has been around since the eighteen hundreds. There are roughly two hundred and eighteen million children who are in the work force today. They range from ages fives years old to seventeen years old. The first form of child labor was believed to be child slavery. If I had to describe a proud moment of mine it would have to be about the summer that just recently passed. In the summer I work as a lifeguard, a serious job that isnââ¬â¢t always taken as serious as it should be, but when faced with danger most of the employees know what to do. Anyways, in the summer I worked as a lifeguard in the afternoons and evenings and in the morning, I would teach younger children how to swim. We will write a custom essay sample on Proud Moment or any similar topic only for you Order Now I was their instructor and they were my students. We had a lot of fun, and I absolutely loved teaching little kids how to do something that I love to do myself. It was hot summer day and a lot of the camp children from the local boys and girls club had just arrived. So all of the lifeguards on duty assumed their positions and conducted a swimming test for the camp kids to make sure they were capable of swimming in the deep end. Once the swim test was over we now let the public into the pool area. A good sized group arrived at the pool, the group consisted of a single lady and about 5-7 other kids. A few of the older ones in the group had been to the pool before so I knew what they were capable of doing in the water. But there was this one little girl that made her was to the deep side and I asked one of them older kids if she was able to swim in the deep end and they said yeah she was she can swim. So silly me, I believed them and continued on with my day surveying the rest of the pool. As I watched the kids climb out of the pool and go do jumps I noticed that the little girl was up next to jump. Remembering the conversation I had with the older kids, I turned to focus on something else, and the next thing I knew, the little girl was bobbing up and down, so I immediately kicked of my flip flops and jumped off of the guard chair and into the pool. I grabbed the little girl and pushed her to the wall. My adrenaline was so high, I didnââ¬â¢t even notice that someone had pulled her out of the water after I brought her to the side. This would have to be my proudest moment not only because I was just doing my job as a lifeguard but I had saved a little girls life. I am pretty proud of myself now even though it is 4 months later. Not much has changed but I am proud that I am enrolled in higher education trying to make something out of myself and make a good living. I am also proud that I am having fun along the way. There really arenââ¬â¢t any differences between these two proud moments other than one was a paying job and it was my duty to help people and now it is my personal duty to fulfill what I want out of life. The printer hummed behind my back, and I turned back to see a long strand of bright yellow paper coming out. I rushed to it and neatly tore the perforated yellow stickers and read the instructions. I soon began to look for a matte blue bin at the top of the shelf. Just as I was about to reach into the bin, a dark shadow of a tall figure said, ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the right one, Jovin.â⬠I recognized the voice while filling a clear plastic bag with the materials listed on the sticker. I replied, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m all right at this task. Itââ¬â¢s just filling the right doses of pills.â⬠I looked at the printer again, and it looked like a volcano of stickers had erupted. I separated each sticker and read, ââ¬Å"Percocetâ⬠and I knew that this one would be discarded in the Confidential Documents Only bin because it was a narcotic. We will write a custom essay sample on Just Another Day at the Pharmacy or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Pride arose in my heart as I quickly distinguished control drugs from non-control, and formulary from non-formulary ones. These crucial experiences at the pharmacy made me further develop an interest in the ever-expanding field of medicine and health care. I no longer skipped those boring drug commercials because they all started to make sense, and they made me even more aware of the drugs available to the world today. ââ¬Å"Jovin, come here,â⬠said the chemo-pharmacist. I entered the IV Room strapped in a gown, wearing a ââ¬Å"bootieâ⬠over my shoes and a head covering that looked like a French beret. After carefully observing her do a myriad of tasks in chemo compounding, she thoroughly explained the process of making the drug. ââ¬Å"All done,â⬠she said, and asked me to accompany her to the Oncology Department. As I heard the pharmacist slowly unveiling the failure of the chemo treatment to the patientââ¬â¢s children, I began to weep. I wasnââ¬â¢t even rel ated to the patient. I felt like I was in the childrenââ¬â¢s position, and I knew it would be unbearable if I heard news like this about my relatives. After seeing the cancer patients, a melancholic feeling replaced the cheery smile that I once had. Another lesson learned: In order to succeed at this profession, one has to set aside personal feelings or otherwise one will become too closely attached to the patients. Back at the pharmacy, I had finished all the tasks. I rapidly began to put away returned pills, and fill clear orange vials with solutions. Stacking countless newly arrived cardboard boxes on the beige shelves was my last task. ââ¬Å"Jovin, itââ¬â¢s four oââ¬â¢clock,â⬠said one pharmacist, and I realized it was time for me to go. I had done a lot that day from filling pills and shadowing pharmacists to helping pharmacy technicians. I couldnââ¬â¢t believe that eight hours went by so fast. I guess time goes so quickly when you learn from experience, and h ave fun. At least, I did.

The Role of a Property Management Company Free Online Research Papers Property management companies are tasked with the responsibility of managing almost all of the tasks that come along with real estate ownership. Probably the most important role is that of acting as a liaison between the landlord and tenant. Some of the duties of property management companies include collecting rent, responding to and addressing maintenance issues, advertising vacancies for landlords, and doing credit and background checks on tenants. In exchange for these services that they provide, property management companies charge landlords a percentage of the rent collected each month, which is typically about 10 percent of the gross rent. I personally own an investment property in the state of North Carolina which is managed by Aaims Property Management in Fayetteville (1). My rental property has a monthly rent of $1000, $100 of which is automatically taken out as monthly compensation to Aaims. At the beginning of a new contract, Aaims has the responsibility of checking the fair market value of the rental properties in the neighborhood of my home, coming to agreement with me about the monthly rent, and advertising the home for rent. Once there are prospective tenants for the home, Aaims screens and interviews the prospective tenants, does a background and credit check, and then confers with me about the final list of tenants that are eligible for the home. Upon reaching an agreement about the chosen tenants, Aaims contacts the tenants and sets up the rental lease, security deposit actions, and provides the tenants their keys. When they move-in, the tenants proceed to provide the monthly rent to Aaims Property Man agement and contact them should they have any maintenance issues or questions about the home. Aaims then directly deposits my rental payment into my checking account every month, less their 10 percent fee. If previously agreed upon in the management agreement, repair costs may be marked up by a percentage by some property managers (2). My property management company does not do this. For example, two months ago the garage door at my rental property stopped working. Aaims Property Management called a local garage door company to come out and fix it. The garage door company fixed the garage door and provided a maintenance invoice to Aaims. Aaims then paid for the repairs and deducted the costs out of my monthly rent payment. I was provided a copy of the garage door invoice along with my monthly rental statement. Some property management companies also manage home owner associations (HOAs) and condo associations. In addition to managing income and expense related activity, property managers may also manage construction, development, repair and maintenance on a property. The role of the property manager in repair and maintenance is large part of a property managers function. Property manager relations with tenants give a face to the landlord and provide them the necessary buffer, servicing their desire to profit and distance themselves from the literal tenant relationship. The property manager also acts as a face of authority to the tenants. Property managers usually do some type of inspections on the property in the timeframe of the lease. Aaims Property Management does quarterly inspections on my property. During these inspections, they check many items such as the exterior roofing and walls as well as the landscaping. On the inside, they check paint, flooring and carpets, appliances, smoke detectors, and air vents. The landlord receives a copy of this checklist upon completion of the inspection, for their records. Not anyone can be a property manager. Most states require that property managers have a real estate brokerage licensure. And if they do not have a licensure, they are considered a property management salesperson, who will closely work with a licensed broker. ââ¬Å"Most states regulate property management by including management functions such as leasing, offers to lease, negotiating leases, renting, collecting rent, etc., as covered real estate activities. In many cases, property managers who do not engage in leasing or renting activities are exempt from licensure. The typical definition of broker also specifies that these activities are being done for another individual for a fee, commission or other valuable consideration. Individuals managing their own properties are generally exempt from licensing requirements (3).â⬠Many real estate brokers who manage properties also double as listing and selling agents in real estate sales. Prior to Aaims Property Management managing my home in Fayetteville, North Carolina, I had the house on the market for sale by owner. One day, a woman came to my home and told me that she was an assistant for a local broker who had someone interested in purchasing my home. She gave me a business card of a broker named Laura Mussler. I called Ms. Mussler as soon as I got the chance because I was very eager to sell my home. It took a couple of days for Ms. Mussler to get back in touch with me, but when she did, she informed me that the ââ¬Å"potential buyersâ⬠found another house that they liked more and decided to purchase that one instead. However, she told me that she would love to meet with me and discuss more options for selling or possibly renting out my home. Ms. Mussler was a very nice lady, so I agreed. Only later on did I learn that this ââ¬Å"baitingà ¢â¬ technique that she used was a scam. Upon meeting with Ms. Mussler, she informed me that the houses in my neighborhood were sitting on the market for rather a long time. 2007 wasnââ¬â¢t a good time to sell, and I believed this being that the market had definitely taken a turn in favor of the buyers recently. Ms. Mussler presented the opportunity of renting out my house. She explained how easy it could actually be with a competent property manager. She claimed that she was personally managing five houses so that while she had a breath of experience in the area, my house would still get the personal attention that it deserved. She advertised all of these services that she could provide under the name of AIT Realty. This was the business on her card. Her phone numbers went to her direct line in her ââ¬Å"officeâ⬠and her cell phone, so I really had no reason to believe otherwise. Upon finding out later on that Ms. Mussler no longer worked for AIT Realty at the time that she solicited her services to me, it was noted by me that she was illegally using AITââ¬â¢s registered trade name and trademark. This type of illegal action is considered to be Unfair Competition. This application of the Lanham Actââ¬â¢s Section 43(a) that could have been violated in this instance are Tort claims for ââ¬Å"palming offâ⬠or ââ¬Å"passing off,â⬠Trade dress infringement claims, Claims for infringement of both registered and unregistered trademarks, Commercial appropriation of name or likeliness claims, or False advertising claims (4). I informed AIT of this at the time, and I do not know if they ever pursued an investigation. Ms. Mussler started managing my property in Fayetteville in August, 2007. In the time that she managed the property, I was the one who found tenants for it because I advertised my rental on a website for military members. Ms. Mussler claims to have completed a background check and taken the tenantsââ¬â¢ security deposit, as well as had completed all of the necessary leasing documentation with the tenants. Shortly thereafter, my rent payment was late. The tenants were due to pay rent on the 1st, and Ms. Mussler was to take out her 10 percent and then directly deposit the remaining balance into my checking account no later than the 4th of every month. This was the verbal agreement between Ms. Mussler and me. In September, 2007, there was no rent check received by me still by the 10th. I called Ms. Mussler to ask what the hold up was and she explained that the bank held the check to clear her account for 10 days and that the money would be deposited as soon as possible into my account. I asked her if it would be possible from then on to cash the check instead of deposit it into her account, and then deposit the net cash into my checking account. She agreed and we decided to go forth with the new plan in October, 2007. In October, 2007, the rent was late again. It was the 8th and I called Ms. Mussler to find out what was going on. She informed me that the tenants had paid their rent late and that she was literally on her way to the bank to cash the check. November came and again, like clockwork, I was calling Ms. Mussler around the second week of the month asking about my late rent payment. She explained to me that there was a long weekend with Veterans Day and that she hadnââ¬â¢t gotten a chance to get to the bank. She apologized and the rent was deposited the next day. In December, the rent was late, yet again. I called Ms. Mussler and expressed my concern with the rent being constantly late and I explained that I had a mortgage to pay every month and that I had a new baby, and she was making the situation extremely stressful by being consistently tardy. She told me that the tenants were late again on the payment and I asked her to please explain to them that they have a 4-day grace period and anything after that may reflect poorly on their credit report. She agreed and promised that she would try her best to not let this happen again. I also asked her during this call if she was to be accomplishing a quarterly inspection on the property. She said yes and told me that she would have the report to me by the end of the month. Come January, 2008, the rent was actually on time, but I still had no documentation of a quarterly inspection. Upon signing the contract with Ms. Mussler, I was given an inspection schedule that annotated that the first inspection would be accomplished on or around December 1st, 2007 and I would be provided a copy of the report no later than 30 days after the fact. When I brought this to her attention, Ms. Mussler responded that that she had completed the inspection and she would have the report to me as soon as possible. My previous neighbor, Melanie, and I had kept in contact throughout this ordeal and she was able to, at this time, obtain the contact information of my tenants. I called them and explained the situation and they informed me that they had not had an inspection on the property at all. At this point I told the tenants that they would be shortly contacted by Aaims Property Management, and that they would set up with them all of the necessary actions for a transfer of management. During this time, I had been doing some research on Ms. Mussler and found out that she was being indicted on county and state tax evasion charges in the case of her previously owned restaurant, the Braz-N-Rabbit. Ms. Mussler collected but failed to pay over $19,000.00 in sales tax to the Department of Revenue (5). I also called AIT Realtyââ¬â¢s main office at this time and asked them about Ms. Musslerââ¬â¢s employment there. They informed me that she was terminated in early 2007 after a rash of complaints. They also told me that her ââ¬Å"assistantâ⬠that came to my house with the information about the ââ¬Å"interested buyersâ⬠was probably her mother, and that they had been using that Bait and Switch techniques on countless other homeowners that listed their home for sale by owner. After telling her that I no longer needed her services and that I would like for her to surrender the security deposit and keys to Aaims Property Management, Ms. Mussler told me that I was under a contractual obligation to pay out her existing contract, or she would not release the aforementioned items. I then explained that she had breached the contract by continuously failing to pay me the rent on time, and because she had failed to complete the quarterly inspection. I told Ms. Mussler that it was also illegal to withhold funds from the tenant, in accordance with the North Carolina Tenant Security Deposit Act (6). Ms. Mussler finally turned over the security deposit to Aaims Property Management and decided to cut all ties with me and to not go after the contract payout. After all was said and done, I filed a formal complaint against Ms. Musslerââ¬â¢s brokerage license with the North Carolina Real Estate Commission, as well as with the Better Business Bureau. I also informed the District Attorney that was prosecuting her tax evasion case of what was going on. Ultimately, ââ¬Å"Judge Carl Fox sentenced Ms. Mussler to six to eight months in prison, but suspended the sentence. She was placed on supervised probation for 48 months. She was also ordered to pay $19,574.61 in restitution and a $1,000 criminal fine, and perform 100 hours of community service (5).â⬠Also, the North Carolina Real Estate Commission concluded investigation of the case and revoked Ms. Musslerââ¬â¢s license and told me that I was not the first to complain. Iââ¬â¢m not quite sure what happened to Ms. Mussler since then, but I can only hope that she has learned her lesson and that she will stay under the radar for a while. My current property management company has been great. They do all of the quarterly inspections, rent is never late, and they always inform me as soon as possible is something is amiss. I am glad that I learned the lessons when I did to check out brokers more carefully. I should have taken more time to investigate Ms. Mussler before hiring her to take care of something so important and valuable. Iââ¬â¢m just glad I learned this all too important lesson so early in my experience and before something larger was at stake, or before I got too invested. 7 Questions to Expect in an Exit Interview About to leave your job? You might be asked (or required) to do an exit interview. This can be frustrating or intimidating. After all, youââ¬â¢ve got your outgoing checklist all but complete, and you already have one foot in your next opportunity. You think the hard part is behind you, and now there is one more task standing between you and the door! Donââ¬â¢t panic. Instead, think of your exit interview as a valuable opportunity for both you and your employer to learn something and grow. All you need to do is be prepared to give thoughtful, diplomatic answers to a few typical questions. Remember, youââ¬â¢ll be less stressed and the whole experience will be more productive if you are prepared. Think of this as an opportunity to let HR know exactly how the company is succeeding and failing. The information you provide can really make a difference for the coworkers and new hires you will leave behind. Here are a few questions to expect.1. Why are you leaving your current positi on?This question could also take the form: ââ¬Å"Why did you begin looking for another job?â⬠or ââ¬Å"What, ultimately, made you accept this other job?â⬠Be prepared to say what was your largest motivating factor for wanting to leave, specifically. If itââ¬â¢s your awful boss, find a way to say that without trashing that person. You wonââ¬â¢t look good if you go negative. Keep it classy and succinct.2. Do you think you were adequately prepared/equipped to do your job well?In each of these questions, it is important to be prepared to provide specific examples. These will be much more resonant and will equip HR to actually make a change in company policy for the future. Did you need some valuable training that you didnââ¬â¢t get, perhaps? Is there a particular program, or other set-up that you really needed in order to perform? Again, be as specific as you can.3. How would you describe the culture of our company? This can get tricky. But prepare a tactful, honest answer, and you can get through it. The more prepared you are to answer, the less youââ¬â¢ll be caught off guard into saying something rash.4. Can you describe your relationship with your manager? This doesnââ¬â¢t mean: ââ¬Å"Did you like your boss or not?â⬠This means, how did your working styles overlap- did they clash or complement each other? Were you given the support and challenge you felt you deserved? Were you set up to succeed?5. What did you like/dislike most about your position here?No one knows better than you. Try not to pick petty things like cool office perks (or lack thereof). Think about how you can help make this company better when you leave.6. What should we require of your replacement? For example,à what skills, experience, and qualifications should they be looking for to replace you? What expertise or training do you wish youââ¬â¢d had? What do you have and know that would be hardest to replicate in a new employee? What magic synthesis of skills (i.e. multitasking and computer programming languages, or people skills and Excel) made you the perfect hire?7. What could we have done to keep you? This question is the most blunt and inviting of a frank response. Sometimes youââ¬â¢ll get the more generic: ââ¬Å"What is the one thing about this company that you would change?â⬠But if you get the candid question, you should feel free to give the honest answer. What would you have needed in order to stay? More money? More responsibility? An extra team member? Benefits packages? More growth opportunities? You can do a lot of good for the next employee- not to mention your current team- if you give a thoughtful answer to this question. Then skip your way out the door and off into the sunset!

Applied methods - Research Proposal Example Perhaps most importantly in this era of transition, leaders themselves must understand that their real legacy will not be the past performance of their financial services organisation, but its sustainable success. Helping leaders learn how to get results by being boundary-less thinkers, network builders, diplomats, and interpreters is a first step in meeting this challenge. Holding them accountable for getting results today and developing next-generation leaders for tomorrow is the quantum leap. The intention of this research proposal is to analyse and evaluate the managerial effectiveness of 'the management', and the perception of leadership and culture within Pembroke Consulting (PC) and the impact on employees and the organisation. Furthermore, it will be argued that the human relations management concept that entails the participation and involvement of all hierarchical levels has not been operative within PC. By examining the Company Background, it will be seen that both management and rank-and-file staff have difficulty coping with and adjusting to the series of transitions that have taken place in their organisation that contributed to its "stalemate" status. It is also shown how financial growth does not correspondingly translate into real development for an organisation or for the growth of the most important resource of any business group, - people. Various research methods will be used to determine perceptions, effectiveness and culture, and a 'way forward' will be proposed in the subsequent dissertation. Since downsizing and restructuring are often just euphemisms for wholesale layoffs, this is a prospect that most Asian financial services organisations and workers have a culturally determined difficulty taking seriously. Sometimes it seems as if some Japanese and Korean financial services organisations would rather close their doors altogether than carry out significant personnel cuts. That's how strong the sense of group identity is in the East. Company Background Pembroke Consulting is a financial services company providing access to financial markets, principally, futures and options, through electronic and other means. It is financial advisors, accountants and general insurance specialists and based in Weybridge, Surrey, UK. Since its inception, the company has undergone tremendous growth both organically and through acquisition, however, it was not, until recently, that the company became an active market-player. Three major company mergers brought about this evolution over the last eight years. Because of which, various aspects of the company including its work volume, staffing and market position all increased exponentially. The mergers contributed predominantly to a great success in terms of the bottom-line but operationally speaking, the outcome has been a disappointing failure. The organisation failed initially to integrate the significant changes brought about by the first two mergers until the last tree years. This was the latest i n a chain of events in the history of Pembroke Consulting

Feedback and Me - Essay Example For instance, if customers are not impressed with quality of service, this is the time to improve and appeal to the clientele (Friedrich, 2012). Feedback is critical in enhancing performance. Without feedback, it would not be easy for me to evaluate performance. How would I know whether I am on the right path? Feedback then becomes the best platform through which I gauge my performance (Sadri & Seton, 2011). I have been criticized severally, told that what I am doing is either right or wrong. Without feedback, there is no direction for my business; there is no reference point. I have had to change my business strategies based on the feedbacks I get from customers and employees. In other words, feedback is paramount for any business. A 360-degree evaluation, for instance, comes in handy in helping me to know what my seniors are thinking about my performance; what my junior are thinking about my performance; and what my peers are thinking about my services as well as leadership styles (Peepers, 2001). Such an assessment would help one to know the expectations of people and improve accordingly. Timely and effective communication is critical in performance management. When employees are given feedback on their progress at work, they will surely improve as nobody wants to fail (Namhata, 2011). In my many years of doing business (I run a food outlet in a busy street), I have learnt that feedback works best when it centers on a particular goal. To be on the safe side, I establish performance expectations of employees as well as goals. This enables me to get objective, tangible, and powerful feedback that helps to gauge future expectations. It also helps to alleviate conflicts between the workforce and me. I remember and instance when I told the workforce I work with that they had exceeded expectations. This was a way of telling them that they were effective and that they were doing such a wonderful job (Namhata, 2011). Feedback should be timely. Employees should

The Corruption of Macbeth and Duddy Essay Everyone should follow their dreams, but sometimes when you get too caught up in your dreams; you begin to forget about reality. Throughout the play Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare and the novel The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, written by Mordecai Richler, protagonists Macbeth and Duddy become corrupted as they on the pursuit of their dream. Throughout the novel The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and the play Macbeth, both protagonists have characters in their life that influence them into becoming corrupt. Both characters, Duddy and Macbeth have such a strong ambition that it leads to the corruption of themselves. Duddy and Macbethââ¬â¢s pursuit of their dreams leads them to be greedy which leads to their corruption. In the play Macbeth, and novel The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, external forces influence Macbeth and Duddyââ¬â¢s decisions, Macbeth and Duddyââ¬â¢s ambition controls their actions and the greed that Macbeth and Duddy possess, all lead to their corruption while they are both on the pursuit of their dreams. Throughout the play Macbeth and the novel The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz we begin to see that external forces in these charactersââ¬â¢ lives help lead to their corruption. In both books we see that some characters attempt to show Macbeth and Duddy that they must commit crimes to accomplish their goals in life. An example from Macbeth is when Lady Macbeth attempts to persuade Macbeth into committing evil acts and tries to explain to him that he cannot change what has already been done. In the play Lady Macbeth says to Macbeth ââ¬Å"Things with all remedy should be done without regard. Whatââ¬â¢s done is doneâ⬠. (Macbeth, 2) This shows us that Lady Macbeth tried to show Macbeth that if you want something you need do whatever you can to obtain it and you cannot change what has already been done in the past, which helps lead to his corruption. Similarily, in Duddy, the Boy Wonder tries to have Duddy commit crimes to ââ¬Å"helpâ⬠Duddy become rich and achieve his go als. One quote from the novel representing this is ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ This quote shows how Boy Wonder tried to have Duddy commit these crimes to try to show him how to accomplish his goals in life, although, it just helps lead to the corruption of Duddy. In both stories external forces have told Macbeth and Duddy what they have to do in order become successful. In Macbeth, the witches inform on how to become king which corrupts him. A quote from the play showing this is ââ¬Å"All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!â⬠(Shakespeare, 10) Another quote showing his reaction to this is ââ¬Å"Stay, you imperfect speakers, tell me more!â⬠(Shakespeare, 11) This shows us how the witches told Macbeth that he could become king and then he gets too caught up in it which finally leads to his corruption. In Duddy we see Simcha tell Duddy that ââ¬Å"A man without land is nothing.â⬠(Richler, ) After Simcha tells Duddy this, Duddy does whatever he can to be a man withà land without truly thinking about what he is doing. This helps leads to the corruption of Duddy. The external forces around Macbeth and Duddy influence their decisions which lead to the corruption of both characters. Macbeth and Duddy are so focused on the pursuit of their dream that their ambition to obtain their dream leads to their corruption. In both stories Macbeth and Duddyââ¬â¢s ambition to pursuit their dream becomes so large that both protagonists are willing to do anything in order to achieve that dream. Throughout Macbeth we see many times where he is willing to do anything in order to become king. A quote from the play showing this is ââ¬Å"The Prince of Cumberland! This is a step on which I must fall down, or else oââ¬â¢erleap; For in my way it lies.â⬠(Shakespeare, 16) Now we see that Macbeth is willing do anything to become king and his ambition to become king has become far too great, and in the end it leads to his corruption and downfall. Just like Macbeth, Duddy is willing to do anything he can in order to obtain his dream and have all his land even if it means hurting others that are close to him. We see this when Duddy steals money from Virgil when it says ââ¬Å"Duddy took a quick look virgilââ¬â¢s bank balance, whistled, noted his account number and ripped out two cheques. He forged the signature by holding the cheque and a letter Virgil had signed up to the window and tracing slowly.â⬠(Richler, 307-308) This shows that Duddyââ¬â¢s ambition to get his land has him doing anything he can to get it which leads to his corruption. Also, throughout both Macbeth and Duddy, their ambition to pursue their dream leads to death or injuries of other characters which leads to their corruption. As Macbethââ¬â¢s ambition grows and he murders Duncan, we see him feel guilt when he says ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll go no more. I am afraid to think what I have done; Look on ââ¬Ët again I dare not.â⬠(Shakespeare, 30) We see Macbeth begin to feel guilty and the more characters that die we see he begins to become more and more corrupt. Similar to Macbeth, we see Duddyââ¬â¢s ambition to pursue his dream lead to a very severe injury of one of his friends. Duddyââ¬â¢s epileptic employee, Virgil, gets injured while driving and we see the corruption of Duddy when he says ââ¬Å"I hope he dies and I never have to see him again.â⬠(Richler, 248) This helps us see that Duddyââ¬â¢s ambition led to the injury of his friend and employee, and we see how corrupt he is becoming. The ambition of Macbeth and Duddy become so great that as they pursue to their dreams, it leads to their own corruption. Macbeth and Duddyââ¬â¢s greed that comes from the pursuit of their dream, leads to their corruption. Both Macbeth and Duddy only care about themselves and it leads to their corruption. An example from Macbeth is when Macbeth hears about being able to be the Thane of Cawdor and the king he wants to know how even though he is already the Thane of Glamis. The witch tells Macbeth, ââ¬Å"All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!â⬠(Shakespeare, 10) Even though Macbeth is already the Thane of Glamis and is considered to be a noble and royal man he wants more. As his greed grows Macbeth becomes more and more corrupted. Similar to Macbeth, Duddyââ¬â¢s pursuit of a dream makes him greedy as he gets a truck for free and lies to Virgil about it so he doesnââ¬â¢t have to pay him $1000. Duddyââ¬â¢s greed for money gets in the way as he lies to Virgil by saying ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s in beautiful shape and he wants twelve-à fifty for it. But if you were interested, Virgie, and willing to pay cash, I think I could swing it for a thousand.â⬠(Richler, 215) We see that as Duddy pursues his dream he becomes greedy and only cares about himself, which leads to his corruption. In both of the stories, Macbeth and Duddyââ¬â¢s greed grow on the pursuit of their dreams and it leads to their loneliness which leads to their corruption. So many people die because of Macbethââ¬â¢s greed on his pursuit of his dream that when Lady Macbeth dies he is all alone and he becomes corrupted. As Macbeth hears about the death of Lady Macbeth he says, ââ¬Å"Lifeââ¬â¢s but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more. It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.â⬠(Shakespeare, 87) We see that as Macbethââ¬â¢s greed grows he does things that make him lonely, and in the end he is all alone with nothing to live for. This helps towards the corruption of Macbeth. Duddyââ¬â¢s greed gets the best of him as he loses Yvette after the injury to Virgil. After Yvette stops seeing Duddy he says, ââ¬Å"Without Yvette the office was a bore. Going out on the road, doing Virgilââ¬â¢s job, was the only peace he knew those days, and heading back for Montreal at two in the morning he always drove as fast he could, sure that Yvette would be home when he got there. Often he woke in the middle of the night, thinking he had heard her on the stairs, but he did not go down to her apartment, and he waited for more than two weeks before he phoned her.â⬠(Richler, 250) We see that as Duddy becomes more selfish, he only focuses on the pursuit of his dream and as he loses Yvette, we see how corrupt he has truly become. Macbeth and Duddy become so greedy because of the pursuit of their dream, in the end it helps corrupt them. Throughout Macbeth and The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, characters in the lives of Macbeth and Duddy help lead to their corruption, Macbeth and Duddyââ¬â¢s ambition towards their goals help lead to their corruption and the greed they both get from the pursuit of their dreams leads to their corruptions. Characters that are in the lives of both protagonists control the decisions the protagonists make which leads to their corruption. The ambition both Macbeth and Duddy achieve while pursuing their dreams leads to their corruption. The greed both characters obtain on the pursuit of their dream has them feeling all alone and it leads to their corruption. In conclusion, on the way to pursuing their dreams, both protagonists Macbeth and Duddy let characters influence their decisions, which helped Macbeth and Duddyââ¬â¢s ambition grow, which made both protagonists greedy, and in the end, both characters Macbeth and Duddy, become corrupt.

Pro Wrestlers ââ¬â Why Canââ¬â¢t They Get Any Respect? Time to point out the obvious: pro-wrestling is not a sport. Why? Because pro-wrestling involves no sport[ing]. Wrestlers do not show up to work every day trying to do all they can to win; they show up to work trying to do all they can to do their job, which is entertain the fans. However, this line of thinking often leads to another conclusion: If pro wrestling is not a sport, then wrestlers are not athletes. This could not be further from the truth. What pro wrestlers do in the ring day in and day out may not be sport, but it is athletic activity on the most demanding level. It is high time that the men and women who work harder than any other professional athletes got a little respect. Think about the four major sports in America: football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. Football players perform once a week. Hockey and basketball players work from 2-4 times a week. Baseball players may play up to five games a week, but the physicality of that sport is much lower than the other three (especially football and hockey). Now, how often do professional wrestlers perform? Well, for example, the World Wrestling Federation performs three weekly shows: Raw on Mondays, Smackdown! on Thursdays, and Heat on Sundays. In addition, each month there is a Pay-Per-View event on a single Sunday. Now, that means 3-4 times per week, already even with hockey and basketball players. However, wrestlers also work what are called House Shows: non-televised "events-between-events." They can do up to 3 a week in addition to their already[-] busy schedules. Not wrestling today? Get on the bus and travel to the next town. Not travelling today? Get in the gym and train. The work never ends. Take ... ... millions watching around the world. Hart fell from rafters 40 feet above the ring, hitting his head on a turnbuckle on the way down and snapping his neck. He died on impact, during what was a common way for him to enter the ring as his "Blue Blazer" persona. Knee and back injuries plague wrestlers from Hulk Hogan to Steve Austin and all the way down, and always have. Pro wrestling is just as dangerous as pro football. And wrestlers get paid a whole lot less, on average. Pro wrestling is not for everyone, and I would be naive to think I could change a lot of minds with this piece. However, I hope I have given sufficient examples as to why pro wrestlers should be given more respect as athletes. A final thought: many pro athletes cannot speak straight when interviewed after a game, but pro wrestlers have to be passable actors, in addition to their athletic prowess.

ââ¬Å"An army of principles can penetrate where an army of soldiers cannot.â⬠-Thomas paine .This thinking of Paineââ¬â¢s motivated the uneducated man forward despite his fallen human condition and bring hope to the common man, a secuatious nation, and the entirety of mankind. We all have some sort of principles that we at least claim to have, whether or not we actually live by them. If you want to have a principle driven life, the first thing you have to do is determine what your principles are. The way to begin determining your principles is to try to think of things you would always or never do, regardless of circumstances. The list of ââ¬Å"never doâ⬠and The list of ââ¬Å"always doâ⬠When you look at these lists, there should be some core things that join them togetherThese things that lie behind the actions on your ââ¬Å"never doâ⬠and ââ¬Å"always doâ⬠lists are your principles.Well, the first thing to do is commit them into your memory and your heart. That way they are always with you, and you can always consider them when deciding which path to take at any particular point in life. A good start to living by your principles would be these ten pillars of a principal driven life: Honesty Integrity Priorities Commitment Persistence Learning From Your Past Be Yourself Courage. Self-confidence When all ten are intact, keeping the focus of your life on your principles is, easy With each one that falls, it becomes harder and harder to keep your focus Ethics and ethical principles extend to all spheres of human activity. Ethics serve to identify good, desirable or acceptable conduct and provide reasons for conclusions. When most people think of ethics (or morals), they think of rules for distinguishing between right and wrong, such as the Golden Rule (ââ¬Å"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you), or a wise aphorisms like the sayings of Confucius. A family is a place where principles are hammered and honed on the anvil of everyday living. Charles R. Swindoll Most people learn ethical norms at home, at school,or in other social settings. Although most people acquire their sense of right and wrong during childhood, moral development occurs throughout life and human beings pass through different stages of growth as they mature. Ethical norms are so omnipresent that one might be tempted to regard them as simple commonsense. On the other hand, if morality were nothing more than commonsense, then why are there so many ethical disputes and issues in our society? One plausible explanation of these disagreements is that all people recognize some common ethical norms but different individuals interpret, apply, and balance these norms in different ways in light of their own values and life experiences. Most societies also have legal rules that govern behavior, but ethical norms tend to be broader and more informal than laws. it is important to remember that ethics and law are not the same. when Mohandas K. Gandhi was assassinated, George C. Wallace, the United States Secretary of state said that ââ¬Å"Gandhi had become a spokesman for the conscience of all mankind a man who made humility and simple truth more powerful than empiresâ⬠Gandhi promoted simple living, non-violence, and forgiveness as a way to unite all people peacefully. These principles helped him to liberate his people As quoted by Napoleon Bonaparteâ⬠Great ambition is the passion of a great character. Those endowed with it may perform very good or very bad acts. All depends on the principles which direct them. ââ¬Å"

The author uses jargon, puns and compound sentences to shape his readers response. This is done by paying attention to his audience which is the readers of the Metro, which are public transport users. Also to his purpose which is to entertain his audience. Puns are used to give a light-hearted effect to entertain his audience. This is evident where the author says ââ¬Å"A new musical talent spreads his wingsâ⬠. This provides entertainment to his readers in the form of comedy. Additionally the words he uses acts as a metaphor, yet in this case the phrase is quite literal as he is talking about a fly. This quite an effective pun. The use of puns provides amusement to his audience and by placing this pun at the beginning of this article it makes the reader intrigued to read on. Furthermore puns are used throughout the article to keep the reader engaged. Jargon is used also as a way to present his readers with photography knowledge. He uses a quote from the photographer which says ââ¬Å"â⬠¦to give a refreshing view on insect marco-photographyâ⬠. By using this the author gives the public a small insight to what technology goes into taking these photos. This uses of jargon also presents another purpose as it shows the photographer of these fly photos to be a professional within this business. Also that it makes it easier for people who know about the subject to follow, as specialized terms can be used without losing information. This is useful as he has a very wide audience and some may understand these terms. The use of compound sentences adds more detail and information. The author says ââ¬Å"Nearly all the photographs of Mr Fly, whose first name was Gerald, were taken in Mr Hendrickxââ¬â¢s bedroom, using mostly natural light and a small eight megapixel camera.â⬠By saying this the author adds more richness to the sentence and therefore by doing so adds more information to his readers. By adding more information the author can entertain his audience which are on the public transport on their journeys. Furthermore that by using compoundà sentences it is more effective in creating a balance between two important pieces of information, thereby leaving the reader with a better understanding of the article. FOUNDATIONS OF IDEOLOGY The popular 17th C scientific approach to understanding natural phenomenon isolating, reducing, dissecting, and separating was adapted for use a social instrument, a political spectrum in the hopes of revealing the constituent parts of political belief. A political spectrum is a way of comparing or visualizing political beliefs by placing them on an axis. The spectrum places conservatism on the right, verbalism centre-left and socialism left of that. Communism and Fascism occupy positions on the extreme left and right respectively. While the spectrum is an inaccurate measure of belief, the following characteristics are generally accepted: An emphasis on equality is considered left-wing and emphasis on liberty is right-wing Government economic interventionism is leftist; limited government is right-wing. Readiness to change is left-wing; support for tradition and the status quo is right-wing. The Political Spectrum Political ideas are often classified according to their position on a political Spectrum. The political spectrum first came into use shortly after the French Revolution in 1789. (Those who sat on the left side of the chamber wanted significant change in government; those on the right wanted little or no change. ) The Political Spectrum: as an expression of peoples readiness to accept change: NOTE: The expression status quo means the current system or the way things are now. If you desire change, then that means changing the status quo. If you leave things the way they are, then you are maintaining the status quo. The status quo) Radical Moderate Reactionary Radical: An extremist of the political left. Radicals want change to the status quo that is immediate and sweeping and are prepared to use violence to achieve their revolutionary goals. Moderate: Someone who is generally satisfied with the status quo. Moderates include both liberals who support progress and accept change as a means of improving conditions for individuals and society, and conservatives who resist change believing that traditions, privilege and law and order are essential to maintaining a civilized society. Reactionary: An extremist of the political right. Reactionaries reject hang and favor a return to traditional values, institutions and the real or imagined glories of the past. Ideological Belief and the Political Spectrum: In the 20th Century, radical Communists believed an international workers revolution would result in collective ownership and a classless society. Moderate socialists sought equality through democratic means. Liberals searched for broader individual rights in a just society. Conservatives defended privilege and individualism. Fascists were reactionaries who opposed equality, promoted uniformity and supported a return to national glory and empire. Communism Socialism verbalism Conservatism Fascism Note: On the spectrum, change moves to the left; consequently, over time, values that once seemed more radical gradually become accepted and eventually may represent the status quo. Liberals in the 1 9th century supported limited government, individual rights but not universal suffrage (it was accepted that certain groups, women for example, should not have the right to vote). Ironically, in contemporary society, it is conservatism that argues for limited government and liberalism that believes government has a meaningful role to play in creating a more egalitarian society. Conservatism, as always, aims to preserve the status quo and its inherent traditions and privileges. A spectrum representing the extent of Government Control Political and economic systems can also be classified according to how much control the government has over its citizens. The extreme right and left of the spectrum favor total government control to achieve their objectives. Socialists believe that government has a significant role in controlling vital industries and agencies. Liberals believe government has a role in shaping a better society. Conservatives believe the role Of government should be limited. Anarchists are so distrustful of the power of government that they believe it should be abolished. These views can be represented in a number of ways: Anarchism No Government (Anarchy) Limited Government (Democracy) Total Government (Dictatorship) Government Control Freedom _ Liberalism Individual TOTALITARIANISM MODERATES ANARCHISM Totalitarianism: A totalitarian state is ruled by a single leader and party. The executive has total control over all functions of the state and citizens are expected to give their full allegiance to their government. Such a state could be Communist or Fascist (also termed authoritarian, absolutist, autocratic, actuarial, one-party state). Moderates: Moderates balance individual freedom with the common good. Moderate states promote pluralism which recognizes the natural rights of a diverse population to actively participate in the governing of the country. The power of the government is limited by the constitution and rule of law. A separation of powers helps ensure that no branch of government can wield extraordinary power without the consent of the governed. Anarchism: Anarchists believe that all government authority is self-serving, potentially corrupt and unjust, and that individuals should be ere from external agencies. Viewed from all other positions on the spectrum, anarchism is rejected as a system that would result in anarchy (chaos); but, this reflects the perspective of those who support government a an institution. EXPLORING THE POLITICAL SPECTRUM The Spectrum as a Grid The difficulty of placing complex beliefs on a left-right spectrum led to the us of a grid system. In this way, an ideology that valued economic freedom but civil restraint could be differentiated from one that preached both economic and political freedom. Economic Freedom Political Freedom Fascists reject political freedoms in a state that glorifies leadership and national objectives. They protect private ownership but control economic decision-making. Communists reject political and economic freedoms in order to create a new communist state. Theoretically government control ends when a classless society is achieved. Libertarians reject government intrusion in the lives of citizens. Libertarians believe individuals should be free to do anything they want, so long as they do not infringe upon the rights of others. They reject collective values and are suspicious of government intrusion in their lives. Socialists use the democratic powers of government to achieve egalitarian objectives. The following example of a two-axis grid shows that it is possible for a person to be one of four combinations of Liberal/Conservative. For instance, someone could be a fiscal conservative On economic issues (i. E. Believes in free markets, limited government, low taxes) and a social liberal on issues such as minority rights. Spectrums are useful in that they provide a visual means of contrasting beliefs on a continuum but because they simplify information they have limited use in pinpointing complex political and economic ideas. Activity 2: Consider the following with reference to what you have just read about The political Spectrum. You might also consider online sources such as: Policewomans. Org Learnable. Ca/content/espies/index. HTML http://en. Wisped. Org/wick/political_spectrum 1 . Briefly identify the characteristics and beliefs of radicals, liberals, moderates, conservatives, and reactionaries in the 20th century. . On the issue of promoting change in social conditions, briefly describe the position of anarchists, communists, socialists, liberals, conservatives, and fascists. 3. On the issue of government intervention in the economy, briefly describe the position of anarchists, communists, socialists, liberals, conservatives, and fascists. 4. Compare and contrast the position Of communists an d fascists in theory. 5. Explain why the radical theory of communism and the reactionary theory of fascism, although opposites, are justifiably placed on the same point on a spectrum depicting the power of government in society. Canadians are generally uncomfortable with extremism. As a democracy Canada is noted for its tolerance and acceptance of a wide range of political beliefs; its governments have never varied from he center stage of conservative and liberal philosophy. The same cannot be said for other countries. Many European nations are hotbeds of political activism. Parties of the far left and far right vie for political power in an proper contest that pits Communist against Fascist, radical against reactionary. Activity 3: Consider the following questions with reference to pages 9- 18 and 105 1 1: in Perspectives on Ideology: 1 . What kind of government and political system would be necessary if one viewed human beings in the same way as Thomas Hobbes, that is, as selfish, nominative, and prone to evil? 2. Why would an authoritarian style Of government be advocated by someone who places the highest value on unity, order, and military strength? 3. Use the DEL glossary to explain the following terms: authoritarianism, autocracy, despotism, dictatorship, divine-right, monarchy, plutocracy, theocracy 4. What would the nature of government tend to be like if one viewed human beings as cooperative, rational, and essentially good, as was the case with John Locke and J. J. Rousseau? 5. Explain how the ideas Of Locke, Nonentities, Smith and Mill challenged the status quo. 6. With reference to page 18 of Perspectives on Ideology: Contrast Rousseau views of man in nature with man in society. To what structures and forces within society did he attribute these differences? 7. Compare Rousseau position with Hobblers. What could account for Ethel different conclusions about the state of man in nature? 8. Explain how the concept of the social contract is reflected in the ideas of Hobbes and Locke. 9. Explain how the social contract might serve as the basis of both individualist and collectivist ideologies. 0. Explain how the differing views of Hobbes and Locke result in significantly efferent ways of organizing society. 1 1. Where are power, authority and decision-making best placed in society? Why? To what extent does your position reflect a Hobnails or Locked perspective? 12. J. S. Mill analyzed the dynamic relationship between the individual and society. Ex plain how this dynamic results in both preservations of and restrictions to individual liberty. Activity 4 Complete the following with reference to pages 23 and 31 -47 and 50-51 of Perspectives on Ideology: 1. Identity could be said to be influenced by genetic, historic, cultural and current factors. Can ones personal identity be separated from ones collective identity? 2. Briefly identify what you consider to be the most critical factors that influence identity. To what extent do these factors represent underlying themes that characterize ideological belief? Activity 5: Complete the following with reference to pages 62 70 in Perspectives on Ideology: 1 . Briefly explain the importance of collectivist and individualist principles in human history. Activity 6: Complete the following with reference to pages 80 85 in Perspectives on 1. Briefly summarize the principles of collectivism. To what extent do they complement rather than oppose the principles Of individualism. Activity 7: Complete the following with reference to pages 44 -47 in Perspectives on 1. Explain Marshall Macaulays concept that the medium is the message. To what extent is medias impact reflected in high tech advertising? 2. Explain how Chomsky and Herdsmans concern with the potential of media to establish hegemonic control might negatively impact the ability of citizens to participate in a democracy. It is important to realize that individualism and collectivism do not represent an either/or proposition. Social issues are complex and should not be reduced to a simple choice. Political rhetoric often characterizes controversial matters in black and white terms creating a popularization that unfairly demotions the opposition. Recognizing this, Social Studies emphasize the importance of critical thinking; making decisions that are supported by evidence and guided by reason. Historical thinking and geographic thinking are important skills in this process. Neither is based entirely on known truths but rather on facts, accepted beliefs and critical interpretations that recognize the influence of a did variety of factors.

Coeducation is an education system where girls and boys are taught together. Many parents have the same dilemma about placing their children in co-ed schools or on-sex schools. Truth to be told, there are many advantages and disadvantages of coeducation. One of the main advantages of coeducation is that a coeducational school enables boys and girls to exchange ideas. Many people have different opinions on different matters. For example, boys and girls many different point of views on education, entertainment, news and many more. There is an healthy exchange of ideas among the opposite sexes. The second advantage is that the spirit of competition is stronger among boys and girls when they study together. Boys and girls love to compete with each other in their academic studies and extracurricular activities. The boys want to prove to the girls that they are better than them by working harder and vice versa with the girls. Thus, their academic performance as well as their performance inn extracurricular activities improves. The desire to be respected and befriended by the opposite sex is the motivating force here. Thirdly, students in coeducational schools are better able to adapt to the society compare to one-sex schools. The boys and girls learn to mix with the opposite sex like studying and working together. This helps them overcome their shyness and fear in the company of the opposite sex. Furthermore, the students learn to respect and understand the different characteristics of the opposite sex. Students in coed-schools will have a better social etiquette with the society, resulting students not going through culture shock when they leave school for college, university and working life . Another advantage of coeducation is one-sex school students may lead to homosexual students. As we learn in science when an adolescent reaches puberty, they will go through physical, physiological and emotion changes-like being attracted to the opposite sex. Students in one-sex school, they have trouble with their emotional changes because everyone in their schools is of the same sex. In order for them to relax, they release their sexual frustration on the same sex. Thus, resulting in gays and lesbians. Many people and parents do not encourage it as this could jeopardize their future. On the other hand, there are many disadvantages of coeducation. Socializing among boys and girls is very common in this generation. Socializing too much with the opposite sex will lead to dating and sexual intercourse at an early age. Students will begin to neglect their studies and spend their time on unappriote events such as parties, disco-theques, picnics and many more. This, in turn, may lead to poor academic performance. This is certainty not to be encouraged. Morever, in the presence of girls. Boys tend to show off their looks, talent and cocky attitude which many girls find, including me, DISGUSTING. Boys show no fear in front of girls so the girls will look at them as ââ¬Ëmacho manââ¬â¢. Boys will be looked down by girls during classes if they keep continuing to show off. Thus, the boys would rather not ask the teachers to explain again even if they do not understand the lesson for the sake of their reputation in front of the girls. Lastly, The confidence of some girls can also be affected by the presence of boys. The most common characteristics of girls is that they are very sensitive, shy, quiet, petty and soft. Well most of them. Whenever they are teased by boys, their self-esteem goes down, they become very quiet and afraid to ask teachers questions about the subject. The girls will take a backseat in discussions in classes to protect themselves from the teasing from the boys. As I mention above, this will lead to poor confidence level and may effect their future. In conclusion, we can say that the advantages outweigh and ââ¬Ëout numberedââ¬â¢ the disadvantages on coeducation. From my point of view, coeducation gives a better exposure to students that on-sex schools which will help them in their future life *PS : Please no offense to the boys if I criticize them in my essay above

Ethical Issue in Advanced Practice Nursing - Essay Example They include the Strong model, Manleyââ¬â¢s model and Bennerââ¬â¢s model. To solve the problems above, the Strong model is the most effective due to its seven encompassing and interrelated domains. The nurses have a role to play in ensuring that the quality of patient care given to patients is high and satisfying. Quality healthcare is paramount for the development of the society and the whole nation at large. The importance of having healthy citizens cannot be understated, and this directly points to the vital and crucial roles played by the nurses. Advanced practice nursing is paramount in ensuring that the nurses who help patients and the general society are not only qualified but also provide the best of services for everyone. The healthcare that nurses provide plays a great role in saving lives, minimizing complications, campaigning and promoting the well being of people, prevention and reduction of suffering and also plays a great role in reducing health related expenditures (Patient-Centered Care, 2013). As a career, nursing has advocated for the frail and the vulnerable and has enlightened the community, all in a bid to improve the quality of life. Suzanne Gordon described the important roles that nurses play (Kelly and Tazbiri, 2013). She described how nurses, with their deep and con siderable knowledge take care of the patients from the dire consequences of diseases and illnesses, infirmity and physical challenges, and the challenges of undergoing some illnesses. They take care of the patients in hospitals and in care homes, or even by caring for them at their homes when the patients lose their ability to perform much of the daily tasks, even the most basic of them such as turning in bed, going for long or short calls, walking around the house or even feeding (Kelly and Tazbiri, 2013). Comparison Thoughts - Essay Example CONTEST is the UK governmentââ¬â¢s strategy for responding to the threat of terrorism. Basically, the strategy focuses on countering the aspirations of terrorists in using ââ¬Å"chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons (CRBN)â⬠. According to The Home Office (2010), CONTEST works with the 4Ps strategy which involves preventing, pursuing, protecting, and preparing for terrorist attacks. Essentially, the strategy aims at preventing people from becoming terrorists and extremists, pursuing and stopping people with terrorist intentions, protecting people from terrorist attacks, and preparing for actions to be taken in case of an attack. In the United States, the Chemical and Biological Defense Program (CBDP) under the Department of Defense is the organ charged with countering CRBN attacks. According to Department of Defense (2013) the principle focus of the CBDP is on preventing, protecting, mitigating, responding, and recovering from CBRN threats. The key strategies are to equip the war fighter with necessary preventive and protective skills, counter imminent threats, and maintain infrastructure for countering these threats. However, unlike CONTENT, the CBDP focuses most of its efforts on protecting the war fighter and then the nation, while the former focuses on the protection of the civilians (Department of Defense, 2013). In this sense, the CBDP should try and emulate CONTENT and focus more on civiliansââ¬â¢ safety. In order to succeed in the 4Ps strategy, CONTEST collects current intelligence on probable attacks and assesses the level of terrorism risk and the vulnerability of the country to such attacks. The intelligence collected also helps CONTEST in tracking down terrorist organizations and their intentions to use CRBN materials on people. Consequently, security agencies pursue and neutralize such threats. In the United States, the CBDP uses bio-surveillance to collect data
